I had every intention of posting at least on time this month. I knew the end of the month was set to be extra busy, so I rented Funny Girl from library at the beginning of the month...and wound up returning it without watching it. Grrrrr, I hate that. I just never found the time in my day, and didn't want to pay out the wazoo for it, so back it went. So, fast-forward to the end of the month...and renting it again. Apparently I spaced the due date, because I rented it a day or two before the actual post was due. With my post-trip scatterbrain, I just couldn't get together what I wanted to make. And I wanted to make the obvious—Filet Mignon with Sauce Bordelaise, in honor of the famous exchange between Nick and Fanny:
Speaking in French, Nick orders "filet de boeuf, sauce bordelaise".
Fanny remarks, "I would have ordered roast beef and potatoes."
To which, Nick replies with a smile, "I did".
I would have also loved to make lobster or seafood, in honor of their time in Boston or on an ocean liner. Maybe bagels or onion rolls - or onion bagels. But in the end, I just ran out of time. Cocktail it was—perhaps something with Scotch, or maybe Sherry, which both make appearances in the film.
So, which direction did I take and what exactly makes up a Funny Girl cocktail? I'm so happy you asked...
- dry sherry—a nod to Fanny and Nick reuniting, when he offers her a very dry sherry, and she replies that she "wouldn't know dry from wet".
- a splash of rosewater—because even though she has plenty of money now, she hasn't forgotten living as a "Second Hand Rose".
- topped off with pink bubbly—to celebrate the fabulousness that is Fanny Brice.
Funny Girl Cocktail
In this Funny Girl Cocktail, dry sherry and a dash of rosewater are topped off with pink bubbly to make a cocktail as dry and endearing as the wit of Fanny Brice herself.

Ingredients (1 cocktail)
- 1/2 ounce Dry Sherry
- 1/2 teaspoon rosewater
- Pink Champagne or Sparkling Wine, chilled
Instructions
Combine Sherry and rosewater in the bottom of a tall, narrow glass (or flute). Top off with cold sparkling wine.
Enjoy immediately and be fabulous like Fanny Brice.
