"Shag Apple" Pie for Two inspired by The Walking Dead

"Shag Apple" Pie for Two inspired by The Walking Dead
Tonight is the night! Season 6 of The Walking Dead was packed with so much good stuff. Lots of story development, lots of action, lots of suspense, and lots of food! I think food has been much more visible this season since we're further into the apocalypse and "stores" are dwindling. I'm guessing that tonight's focus won't be on food, it'll be on finally interacting with Negan face to face. Which means that months of waiting to see Jeffrey Dean Morgan's beautiful face on Sunday nights will finally come to fruition. Even though I'll probably hate him.

A few other things that I'm hoping will be at least somewhat covered are *SPOILER*:
  • Tara coming back to Alexandria and finding out that Denise was killed.
  • Finding out the fate of Daryl (please be okay...please be okay...please be okay...) and the rest of the group being held by Dwight and buddies.
  • Maggie's agony (again, please be okay...please be okay...please be okay...).

I bet we'll have to wait until next season to hear anything else about Carol and Morgan, though. Rick and Morgan had a true "good bye for now" moment last week, so I'm thinking that was our closure.

Anyhoo, today I wanted to make something for "Richonne". I'm not gonna lie, I think it's a little weird. Every time I see them kiss or something, all I can repeat over and over again...like the whole time it's happening...is "it's weird!".

It's weird. It's weird. It's weird.

I mean, I love both characters separately. I'm not sure if I'll be able to come to terms with them being together any time soon, though. That being said, their relationship has been good for some weird cringey-type giggles towards the end of season 6. The first coming when both of them jumping up naked from bed, weapons in hand, when Jesus walks in the bedroom in episode 10.
Rick and Michonne eating their "shag apple".
The latest being at the start of last week's episode (15) when Rick and Michonne are lying (once again) buck naked in bed. Michonne reaches over and grabs an apple from the nightstand. And then they share it. Naked, in bed. It's weird!

But what made it especially funny was Chris Hardwick dubbing it the "shag apple" later that night on Talking Dead. I knew right then and there that I was going to make a "Shag Apple" Pie—for two, of course—as a nod to that scene.

It's best eaten naked in bed after a good shag, still warm with ice cream, using nothing but a fork or two.

  • 2 large apples, peeled, cored, and cut into rough chunks
  • 2 tablespoons (1 ounce) unsalted butter
  • scant tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
  • pinch of ground cloves
  • pinch of salt
Instructions
Preheat oven to 425° F.

Roll dough out into a 10-inch circle. Set the dough into a deep-dish 5.5-inch (or slightly smaller) pie plate. Trim around the edges, leaving a 1/2-inch border.
fitting crust into pie pan and cuttin off extra
Tuck the extra dough underneath to make a thick rim, crimp as desired, then set in the refrigerator for 30 minutes.
forming crust 2
Rip the remaining dough (that you trimmed off of the edge) into "shaggy" shreds and set aside for now.
pie crust shags for the top
Set the pie plate on a foil-lined baking sheet. Tumble the prepared apples into the chilled pie crust, then scatter the shaggy bits of reserved dough over the top of them.

Melt the butter in a small saucepan, then stir in the flour until it is all absorbed. Add the water, both sugars, spices and salt and bring to a boil. Reduce to a simmer and let bubble for 1 minute, until syrupy. Very slowly pour the syrupy mixture evenly over the apples and shaggy crust bits.
pie ready for oven
Slide into hot oven and bake for 12 minutes, then reduce the heat to 350° F and bake for another 25-30 minutes, or until apples are tender.

Allow to cool a bit, then serve the warm pie with two forks for eating straight out of the pie plate. Or share a fork. Add a scoop of ice cream to the center if you desire.
