Fast forward to the release of season 2 of Daredevil—which I do watch and had been anxiously awaiting. As per my m.o., I immediately binge-watched it (something I equally love and loathe about the way Netflix simultaneously releases an entire season of their original programming).
This season introduced The Punisher and Elektra. There were also plenty of mentions of food, specifically due to the fact that Nelson and Murdock accept anything their clients can pay them, and oftentimes, that payment comes in the form of food. So why, pray tell, is this a post about Jessica Jones, you may be wondering? Because of a little name-dropping.
So, Jessica Jones. A badass P.I. with superhuman strength that she uses to help people. The show hasn't revealed Jessica's entire origins story yet...just bits and pieces. I guess this is where reading the comics would be helpful. But instead, I just googled it. I won't go into it (because who knows if you're even still reading at this point), but I will say that she has connections with Peter Parker and how she developed her abilities may have to do with Tony Stark. If you want to know more about that now, you can read this and this.
Since I have nothing to compare the characters to, I can only say that they all seem to be well-suited to their roles. Each one developed their own level of intrigue as the season progressed, and I hope that the show keeps going so that we get to know them further.
As soon as the door is closed though, she hungrily sends it down the hatch to mingle with the massive amounts of whiskey (her usual meal of choice) that are already in her stomach. Without giving you any further spoilers, I'll tell you that Ruben dies several episodes later.
(Malcolm) "Ruben was such a great guy; he was kind and gentle. I don't know he put in that banana bread, but it was like crack. Wait...was it crack?"
(Robyn) "Nutmeg."
A distraught Robyn is comforted by Malcolm, another neighbor (and pretty major character this season), who mentions how fantastic Ruben's banana bread was. While I could have make something...anything...with whiskey as a nod to Jessica herself, it was Ruben's banana bread with crack-like properties that won out.
My family just so happens to have a banana bread recipe that's been passed down for 5 generations now...so yeah, it's THE BEST BANANA BREAD ever. If you ask us. Everybody has their own ideas and tastes, but this one is ingrained in our DNA, so...you know how that goes. I did tweak our family recipe just slightly to include some nutmeg, though.
P.S. This banana bread is like crack.
The Best Banana Bread
This simple to make family favorite version of banana bread is bursting with fresh banana flavor and a hint of nutmeg.

Ingredients (1 loaf)
- 4 ounces (1/2 cup) salted butter
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon buttermilk
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 2 large eggs, lightly beaten
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
- 3 very ripe (brown) bananas, mashed
Instructions
Preheat oven to 325° F. Line an 8 1/2" x 4 1/2" loaf tin with parchment or foil, leaving an overhang for easy removal.
For best results, make this old-fashioned banana bread recipe by hand, using only a fork for mixing.
In a large bowl, cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Dissolve the baking soda in the buttermilk, then stir in to the bowl. Mix in the eggs.
Add the flour and nutmeg and stir until just combined. Stir in the mashed banana. Scrape the mixture into the prepared tin and smooth the top gently.
Slide into preheated oven and bake for 60 to 65 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean and the top is golden and cracked down the center. Tent with foil if the top starts to get too dark during the end of baking.
Use the parchment overhang to lift the loaf out of the pan and set it on a wire rack to cool.
