The women and girls on the maternal side of my family have what some might call hoarding tendencies, but we prefer to think of ourselves as collectors. That's why, at least a couple of times a year, we commandeer a large table and pile it high with magazines piles that have grown slightly too large for comfort.
We come armed with coffee and plenty of sustenance to carry us through a few solid hours of good-natured chatter and the ripping and sharing of recipes and home and garden ideas. By the end of our decluttering session, we are each left with our own tidy "pile with purpose" and a full recycling bin.
Depending on whose house we're at, the coffee could come from a french press, a coffee machine, or from a canister of instant. There was always a jar of Folgers instant coffee hanging out in my grandma's cupboard, right next to her sugar bowl.
During one of our family get-togethers at grandma's, my brother noticed my mom pouring hot water into her mug, over the scoop of instant coffee crystals...and then taking a sip without stirring. He questioned her about whether or not she was going to stir it, and she said "it's instant, you don't have to stir it!". She turned to grandma for confirmation (and received it).
All of us "kids" got a kick out of that and it has since become a running joke in the family that comes up every time we're all together and the jar of instant coffee comes out. And we (the grown-up kids) all stir ours.
But I mentioned that along with our coffee, there has to be food. Since we're not sitting down to a meal, it's usually some sort of sweet treat that accompanies it. So today I wanted to share 5 "types" of food that, when set on the table alongside your coffee, will complement it perfectly.
