I'm happy to working with Guinness again this summer to share another Guinness BBQ Challenge idea! Last year I shared a grilled pizza recipe that was topped with grilled onions, peppers, corn, and brats to pair with Guinness's crisp, hoppy Blonde American Lager. This year I accepted their challenge to put my own personal twist on a shandy.
If you're not familiar with shandies, they are basically a beer cocktail that is made using half beer and half lemonade (or gingerale, ginger beer, or another citrus juice). They're a refreshing adult beverage option for summertime, and usually have fairly low alcohol content—if you use the half and half ratio.
I decided to go full-out summer fun with my shandy by turning it into a frozen slushie. With only two ingredients, it's incredibly simple to make, but...IT'S A SLUSHIE PEOPLE!
It does take a little advance preparation, but that prep is mostly hands-off. The base of the drink is basically a beer granita which is made by pouring beer into a metal pan, putting it the freezer, and scraping it with a fork every now and again once it begins to freeze. While the beer is in the freezer, stash your favorite kind of lemonade in the fridge so it's nice and cold when the beer is ready.
I made slushies with regular lemonade and meyer lemonade, and both were delicious. For a fun or signature spin, I'll be using pineapple or mango lemonade at our next cook-out (flavor your lemonade with fresh fruit juice or flavored simple syrup).
If you're kicking back and enjoying these outside under the summer sun, it's inevitable that they'll start to melt a bit. But guess what? They just melt into regular (delicious) shandies, perfectly mixed—so that's okay. I recommend slurping up the frozen bliss while you have, though.
Hey adults—you deserve a brain freeze today.
