"Z Weed" Munchies Mix | Z Nation

"Z Weed" Munchies Mix | #ZNation
Welcome to another edition of "In the kitchen with Zombie Fiction"! In honor of tonight's season 3 premiere, I'm sharing a recipe inspired by the hilarious Syfy series Z Nation. I hear a lot of people hating on Z Nation, calling it a TWD ripoff. I'm pretty sure that none of those people have actually ever watched it, because (and if you know me, you know I'm a diehard TWD fan) they are wildly different, similar only in that they are both zombie shows.

In a nutshell, our main cast of characters have been working their way towards a government lab in California for the past 2 seasons. Their goal was to deliver Murphy—the only person to be bitten repeatedly by zombies, injected with an experimental cure in a secret government lab (as a prisoner), and still be alive—to the lab.

Murphy can walk among zombies, who see him as sort of an idol...he can also control them with his mind. Each episode finds our characters in a new predicament or environment. The recipe that I'm sharing today was inspired by S2:E3 "Zombie Road", in which our group encounters a "post-apocalyptic wagon train" that is transporting survivors of a nuclear blast to safety.

After helping the group fend off a band of undesirables, they spend the rest of the episode seeking an abandoned Agro lab in Minnesota that is rumored to be working on an herbal cure...but not until after Doc and Murphy accept an invitation from Wrecking Ball to "levitate" with some Z Weed, which is grown in that Minnesota lab, using zombies as compost.

I've always been a fan of stoner humor, so I couldn't resist creating a recipe to go along with this scene. I've included the scene below. It's not the greatest quality, but it's the only clip I could find on YouTube. Munchies! I thought it would be fun to make a play on words with "z weed" and "seaweed", but also make a treat suitable for a bout of munchie madness.

Seaweed Snack Mix

Seaweed Snack Mix (aka "Z Weed" Munchies Mix)

prep time: 10 MINScook time: 15 MINStotal time: 25 mins
This salty-sweet snack mix with seaweed is the perfect answer to a case of the munchies!

INGREDIENTS:

  • 6 cups Crispix cereal
  • 2 cups mixed nuts
  • 2 cups small pretzels
  • 1/4 cup + 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup honey or agave nectar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 teaspoons wasabi paste
  • 1 (.35 ounce/10 g) package of Sesame Roasted Seaweed sheets, broken into pieces

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Preheat oven to 325° F. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper or foil.
  2. Combine cereal, nuts, and pretzels in a very large bowl and use yours hands to gently toss and combine.
  3. Whisk all of the remaining ingredients except the seaweed together until well-combined, then drizzle evenly over the dry ingredients. Toss gently to coat.
  4. Spread the mixture onto the prepared baking sheets. Slide into preheated oven and roast for 15 minutes—stir after 6 minutes, then after 12 minutes (not 12 more, just 12 total) scatter the seaweed over the top and stir once more before cooking for the final 3 minutes.
  5. Remove from oven and allow to cool completely before serving (it will crisp up as it cools). Once cool, this snack mix can be stored in an airtight container at cool room temperature for 3-5 days.
