But the thing is, ours always came from a round, lined cardboard canister of Swiss Miss. Well no, sometimes we had the boxes with individual packets. And I won't lie, I always liked the kind with the crunchy, dehydrated marshmallows. Or, if somebody didn't get to the bag, we'd pile on soft mini marshmallows—and that was good, too.
If we used all of the mix up before mom got to the store, we'd have to pull out the back up container (aka Ovaltine) and use that with hot milk. Because, you know, the packets used water. I love Ovaltine, but for some reason, I prefer it cold.
Anyhoo, I digress. My whole point is to say that instead of buying the packets or canisters, you can make your own homemade hot chocolate mix in just a few minutes (and it's miles better than the storebought stuff). This recipe will make 8 cups of finished hot cocoa, but I like to make a really big batch (usually times 4), and then put it in mason jars in the pantry.
After snow, after school, after dinner—it's good any time! I mean, it is a staple, after all.

Homemade Hot Chocolate Mix

Keep a jar of this homemade hot cocoa mix in your pantry so you can make yourself some instant hot cocoa anytime you want!
INGREDIENTS:
- 3/4 cup powdered sugar
- 1/2 cup cocoa powder
- 3 ounces bittersweet or semisweet chocolate, coarsely chopped
- 2 teaspoons cornstarch
- 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
INSTRUCTIONS:
- Combine all of the ingredients in the bowl of a food processor and let it run until you have a smooth powder. There may be a few smallish chunks of chocolate left, and that's okay.
- Transfer to a jar with a lid or another airtight container and store at room temperature.
To make hot chocolate from the mix:
- For each serving, bring 1 cup of milk (preferably whole or 2%, but use your favorite) to a simmer over medium heat. Whisk in 3 tablespoons of the hot cocoa mix and cook, whisking occasionally, until mixture returns to a simmer, mix dissolves, and it thickens slightly, 1-2 minutes.
- Serve straight up, or get fancy by dipping the rim of your mug in chocolate syrup and then crushed peppermint candies (or a candy cane) before pouring in the hot chocolate. Top with whipped cream and marshmallows (like these homemade peppermint mini marshmallows).
- Make it boozy by adding a shot of Peppermint Schapps to the glass before pouring in the hot chocolate.
