Fire Swamp Fireball Cocktail | The Princess Bride #FoodnFlix

Fire Swamp Fireball Cocktail | The Princess Bride #FoodnFlix
I'm sliding in last minute with my submission for this month's Food 'n Flix club pick, The Princess Bride. I grew up with this 1987 film, based on the 1973 novel of the same name (which I haven't read yet, but will one of these days), so it's totally nostalgic for me, but the great thing about it is that it stands the test of time—my kids love it, too...and laugh out loud right alongside me.

If you haven't seen it, it has a little bit of everything from comedy to fantasy to romance (in a light, fun way that seems to be just as acceptable to guys as it is to girls) to adventure. It's sort of set as a story within a story, in the form of a grandfather reading a book to his grandson. But our main story revolves around the love story of Buttercup and Westley. Since Westley is just a meager farmhand, he sets out to find his fortune, so that he is worthy of Buttercup.

Buttercup vows to wait for him, but 5 years after learning of his (presumed) death at the hands of the Dread Pirate Roberts, she is begrudgingly engaged to marry the pompous Prince Humperdinck. Shortly before her wedding date, she is kidnapped by three banditos, and then rescued by a valiant, masked hero...who turns out to be her true love Westley, alive as can be.

From there, we find out that Humperdinck is the actual bad guy, two of banditos are lovable and somewhat noble, revenge is a dish best served cold, and true love wins out in the end. That's the gist of it, though there's so much more to it. It's a fun way to spend 90 minutes!

There are several scenes that show or mention food, and all sorts of underlying inspiration. I desperately wanted to make a nice and lean mutton, lettuce, and tomato sandwich (MLT) ala Miracle Max, but I can't get my hands on mutton. I thought about substituting lamb, but it wouldn't really be the same. So, that will be another day.

Instead I went a little outside the box and pulled inspiration from a scene where Westley and Buttercup "escape" through the Fire Swamp, a dangerous detour in which they have to maneuver their way through R.O.U.S.'s (rodents of unusual size), lightening sand, and flame spurts (aka fire balls).

While they are technically called flame spurts, I've always referred to them as fire balls, so I made a cocktail featuring two different fire balls—the candy and the cinnamon whiskey. I used cream soda, thinking it would make the drink look a little murky (swampy), but it didn't really do that as much as I'd have liked (though the candy does let off a bit of red murk as it sits). Maybe a splash of cream would lend the right effect. And a little bit of sweetness from the addition of Licor 43, as a nod to the love between Buttercup and Westley.
