With the help of John's journal, the guys deduce that what they're dealing with is a Wendigo, based on the cannibalistic creature from Native American lore.
In some legends, a Wendigo is created when a human turns to cannibalism in order to survive. Since Wendigos hibernate, they have to capture humans and store enough to last through the winter. This is the hope that keeps the search party going (though they do realize that John is probably not here).
As the group starts into the forest, Haley confronts Dean, telling him she knows they are not Rangers since they're only carrying a duffel bag and didn't pack any provisions. Dean comes clean, admitting to Haley that they think their father is missing, as well. And in typical Dean-fashion, pulls a bag of Peanut M&M's from his pocket, indignantly proclaiming...
Later in the show, guide Roy has been taken by the Wendigo, and the group has split up. Sam and Ben are trying to find Dean and Haley when Ben notices a trail of Peanut M&M's, which he shows Sam, to which he replies "it's better than breadcrumbs".
